Description:

**Originally listed for $1100.

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Ameca Style, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a terracotta vessel depicting a seated figure leaning forward with legs bent at the knees, one hand on his knee, the other holding a rattle, with an elongated face in the Ameca style. Size: 8.5" W x 12.1" H (21.6 cm x 30.7 cm)

The figure is burnished a creamy orange. The Ameca style is characterized by an elongated face and a high forehead capped by a turban-like piece of headgear. The eyes are a perfect example of this style -- wide and staring, with added strips of clay (fillets) around them as exaggerated eyelids. The face is much more naturalistic than most Jalisco figures. This is a really nice example of a highly popular style!
