Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Ameca Gray Type, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A seated female Jalisco figure, nude except for her elaborate headdress adorned with a plaited, crossed headband and a knee-length skirt/loincloth. She possesses a characteristiclly enlarged, elongated head with a somewhat somber visage comprised of large, almond-shaped eyes, a long protruding nose, and closed mouth, and a wide torso with attenuated arms adorned with applied shoulder pellets. These pellets have been interpreted as scars by some scholars, but others have suggested that the epaulet-like dispersion more likely represented ornamentation, perhaps shell beads. The body still shows areas of light cream and red pigment. A wonderful example. Size: 7.25" W x 10.25" H (18.4 cm x 26 cm)

Provenance: Ex - private LA County collection acquired before 1990
