Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Ameca Gray type, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery female figure sitting with bared breasts and hands placed atop her skirt. The characteristic gray coloration of this type covers her entire body while faint remains of orange and red pigment are visible along her right arm and shoulder. Figures like this example were typically placed around the body of a deceased individual within a shaft tomb as a protector. Size: 8.875" W x 10.625" H (22.5 cm x 27 cm)

  • Condition: Repaired with restoration to upper chest, shoulders, and chin, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and light earthen deposits commensurate with age, with light fading to gray pigment in scattered areas. Nice preservation to overall form.
