Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, Ameca-Etzatlan, ca. 1st century BCE to 3rd century CE. An exceptional hollow-bodied figure of a woman in the Ameca-Etzatlan style, seated with a skirt draped over her thighs and her chest bare. Her elongated head faces forward with an impassive expression, featuring carefully molded eyelids around slightly bulging eyes, a prominent nose above full lips, and a simple cap crowning her head. Her left arm extends outward, while her right hand rests beside her head. Protrusions on her shoulders may represent scarification, while a series of raised nodules along her spine emphasizes her slightly hunched posture - a distinctive trait in Jalisco art, known for highlighting physical conditions or deformities. The figure is expressively rendered in a finely burnished red and cream slip. Size: 6.5" L x 7" W x 12" H (16.5 cm x 17.8 cm x 30.5 cm).

The large number of hunchback figurines found in ancient western Mexico suggests that these physical traits held special significance or social status, as evidenced by their frequent appearance in pottery. Individuals with conditions such as kyphoscoliosis may have been believed to possess supernatural abilities, making them well-suited for roles as shamans, sorcerers, or divine messengers.
