Description:

Captain J. D. Guille (Irish, 20th century). "Scarteen Hounds ('The Black & Tans')" oil on canvas board, 1971. Signed and dated at lower right. A lovely painting by Irish artist Captain J. D. Guille depicting horse riders and hounds hunting beside the Dublin-Cork railway line near Elton. Thady Ryan MFH is shown riding Spencer as he jumps over a drain. The hounds that race ahead are named, from left to right: Carpenter, Plunder, Barrier, Barman, Bandit, Sailer, and Captain. Two observers follow Thady, riding through the rolling Irish hills with the Galtee mountain range rising in the distance, all beneath a classic Gaelic sky of white and gray clouds. Size of painting: 23.5" W x 19.5" H (59.7 cm x 49.5 cm); of frame: 30.75" W x 27" H (78.1 cm x 68.6 cm)

"Thaddeus 'Thady' Ryan of Scarteen was Master of the family pack of Kerry Beagles from 1946 to 2005, the year of his passing. Records show this unique breed of hounds has been in the Ryan family at Scarteen for ten consecutive generations stretching back more than three centuries. The pack hunted hare in the earlier years, then the stag, and finally, in 1927, the fox." (Dickie Power. "Thady Ryan: Three Centuries of Tradition at Scarteen." Fox Hunting Life website)
