Itzchak Tarkay (b. Yugoslav-Hungarian border, immigrated to Israel in 1949, 1935-2012). "Floral Encounter" serigraph in color with hand embellishment on canvas, 2006. Hand-signed in pigment at lower right and numbered 180/250 on the verso. From a deluxe numbered edition of 250. An outstanding serigraph in color with wonderful hand embellishments on canvas depicting a fashionable woman relaxing in the company of a beautiful floral arrangement by Israeli artist and Holocaust survivor, Itzchak Tarkay. An exciting modern figurative artist, Tarkay amplified the vibrancy of this scene with various textures - vertical striations applied with a translucent medium over the background and chaise lounge as well as gestural impasto work that creates a nubby texture over her yellow sleeveless blouse and follows the contours of the floral blooms and leaves as well as her feather adorned beret. Tarkay was a master at creating rhythms and patterns with shapes and colors in his compositions, and "Floral Encounter" certainly demonstrates this in spades! Itzchak Tarkay was a Holocaust survivor who was sent to the Mathausen Concentration Camp with his family when he was only 9 years old. Upon being liberated by the Allied forces, his family then immigrated to Israel, where they lived on a kibbutz for several years. Itzchak studied art at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design as well as the Avni Art Academy under Schwartzman and also benefited from the mentorship of important Israeli artists such as Janko, Mokady, Streichman, and Stematsky - simultaneously falling under the influences of French Impressionism and Post Impressionism, especially the sophisticated color theory of Matisse and a penchant for line commanded by Toulouse Lautrec. According to a press release dated June 4, 2012, the day after Tarkay's unexpected death following emergency heart surgery, "His studies of women, landscapes and other Israeli-inspired imagery were unique in late 20th Century art and although they clearly bore the indelible stamp of his Israeli roots, they also exhibited the influences of Toulouse-Lautrec, Matisse, Braque and Vlaminck."
