The Republic of Siena was one of the powerful historic city-states that made up much of Italy during the medieval and Renaissance periods. It was a major center of money lending and played a major role in the important pan-European wool trade. However, the city was decimated by the Black Death in 1348 and never truly recovered; its final two centuries were marked by political unrest and internal strife. This coin was one of the last ducats to be issued by the city state before it was conquered by the Spanish King Philip II who then, owing a tremendous amount of money to the Medicis, ceded it to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, where it stayed, lacking independence, until the unification of Itay in the 19th century.
