Description:

Near East/Central Asia, Iran and Afghanistan, Samanid Dynasty, ca. 10th to 11th century CE. A gorgeous yellow, red, dark brown, and white bowl with steep sides and a flat base. Repeated diamond patterns and floral motifs line the inside of the bowl, while the exterior has red-on-white spiral and curlique patterns that may represent growing crops. Samanid potters invented slip-painted ware, achieving a beautiful clarity of design. See, for example, how the painted iconography here, especially on the exterior, has crisp lines. They used a white englobe (a thin slip wash) to cover red earthenware and then painted the final pattern in pigments mixed with slip. Size: 12.7" W x 4.7" H (32.3 cm x 11.9 cm)
