Persia, Kashan, ca. 10th to 12th centuries CE. This is a white clay oil lamp with a thick turquoise iridescent glaze. It has a loop handle and a bowl base, also glazed. Kashan was a major site of ceramic production during the medieval period and its name means "glazed tilework" in Arabic and Persian. The town was situated near sources for both the body of the pottery and the glazes, and exported its wares widely during this time period. Vessels like these were the products of multiple glazes and firing sessions. This particular piece has an eye-catching color and has retained its brilliance through the centuries! Size: 3.25" L x 4.3" W x 3.3" H (8.3 cm x 10.9 cm x 8.4 cm).
