Description:

Nishapur, Iran, ca. 10th Century CE. This is a wheel cut clear glass bottle engraved with two animals in panels alternating with chevron panels. Medieval Nishapur was one of the great centers of Islamic culture, at its pinnacle of prosperity and cultural achievement in the tenth century under the Samanids, through the eleventh century under the Turkisk Seljuks. A series of earthquakes in the tweltfh and thirteenth centuries damaged it, and the Mongols completed the job, razing it to the ground in 1221, but during its heyday, it produced glass vessels that traveled as far afield as Venice and Japan. Size: 3.4" W x 6.1" H (8.6 cm x 15.5 cm)
