Description:

Ancient Near East, Islamic, ca. 9th to 10th century CE. A beautifully preserved jar comprised of thick translucent glass and decorated with wheel-cut designs. The vessel sits upon a flat octagonal base with an incised ring and rises to cylindrical walls that boast patterns of rectangular, triangular, and arching shapes that are deeply cut or filed and polished around the exterior surfaces. The shoulder has an incised ring and narrows to a neck with eight cut squares and a collared rim. Romans developed the techniques of wheel-cut glassware during the 1st century CE which spread throughout the Mediterranean region into Islamic culture. Thick, clear glass was favored for its strength and ability to withstand extensive cuts. Size: 2.25" W x 3.25" H (5.7 cm x 8.3 cm)
