Description:

Near East, Persia (Iran), ca. 9th to 10th century CE. A thin cast bronze cleaver with a short blade and tang as well as silver inlay. The wide rectangular blade is the shape of a butchery cleaver. The top edge on one side has a 42% silver inlay of a Kufic inscription within a rectangular border line. The bronze surface has developed a rich green patina with russet and blue coloration over the ages. Kufic is the predecessor to modern Arabic scripts. Writing and calligraphy was an artform for the Persian empire and was the script of choice for inscribing the Qur'an. Size: 7.25" L x 2.75" W (18.4 cm x 7 cm); quality of silver: 42%
