Description:

Near East, Iran, ca. 1501 to 1736 CE. An Iranian silver-plated copper divination bowl, of the type that emerged in the Safavid period (1501-1736) and featured a variety of decorative themes - religious, historical, and even superstitious. The traditional practice of divination or fal was faciltated via sacred text and oftentimes Greek astrology. This divination bowl is copiously engraved with divine text and imagery. On the interior are four roundels that present anamorphic figures, possibly referencing zodiac signs, as well as painstakingly inscribed text passages. The exterior is also decorated with a central eight-pointed star surrounded by more divine text arranged in registers and contained in geometric shapes. A wonderful example of religious artistry from the ancient Near East. Size: 5.25" W x 1.375" H (13.3 cm x 3.5 cm)
