Ephesus is southwest of the modern city of Selçuk in Izmir Province, Turkey. The city flourished during Classical Greek times and was one of the twelve cities in the Ionian League. The bee is a very common motif on coins struck in Ephesus, as apparently they were omnipresent in antiquity.
