Description:

Northwest Coast, British Columbia, Canada, signed Dl Nahanee likely referring to artist David Nahanee (Coast Salish, b. 1939), ca. mid 20th century. Hand-carved from cedar wood, a totem representing the Thunderbird, with its distinctive face presenting characteristically large eyes, raised ears, and curved long beak. The Thunderbird is perched upon its legs, both with nicely delineated plumage and talons, and with its long wings, meticulously incised with details, held to each side of his body. The carving is attached to a block stand via a peg - both appearing to be made from cedar as well. The piece is neatly incised with "THUNDER BIRD D. NAHANEE" on the verso. Size: 8.125" H (20.6 cm); 9.25" H (23.5 cm) on included custom stand.
