Native American / First Nations, Northwest Coast United States, Alaska or Canada, Inupiaq / Inuit people, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A hand carved whale bone landscape - representing an ice floe with soapstone seals. The seals are carved in relaxed basking positions and are balanced via pegs, all are removable; a charming piece that captures the arctic environment! Whale bone sculpture requires the use of older bone that has dried and ossified - new bone will splinter and be too oily to carve- hence the wonderfully aged and weathered appearance. Size: 7" L x 7" W x 5" H (17.8 cm x 17.8 cm x 12.7 cm); seals: 3" L x 1.5" W (7.6 cm x 3.8 cm)
