Description:

Native American / First Nations, Northwest Coast United States, Alaska or Canada, Inupiaq/Inuit people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A pair of hand-carved seal sculptures made from whale bone. Carvings of animals Inuit hunted commemorated the spirit and the respect ensured successful future hunts. Whale bone sculpture requires the use of older bone that has dried and ossified - new bone will splinter and be too oily to carve- hence the wonderfully aged and weathered appearance. Size of whiter seal: 7.75" L x 7.5" W x 4" H (19.7 cm x 19 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private Greenwood Village, Colorado, USA collection
