Description:

Ralph Porter (Inuit, b. 1942). Shaman sculpture (stone, musk ox horn, and onyx), ca. 2000. Signed "R.P" on underside of foot. A skillfully hand-carved shaman by internationally known Inuit artist Ralph Porter who specializes in shamans rendered in a Grotesque style. This shaman figure has all the telltale features of Porter's signature Grotesque style - a ghoulish visage with large inlaid eyes, flaring nostrils and sharp teeth topped by a wild coiffure as well as a dramatic pose, stumpy limbs, and exaggerated body parts - and also wields an intimidating spear carved from muskox horn. Size: 14.25" H x 7.75" W x 4.75" D (36.2 cm x 19.7 cm x 12.1 cm)

About the Artist: "Ralph is from a family of Gjoa Haven artists. Other sculptors in his family are his mother Martha Porter, his brothers Walter and Benjamin Porter, and his sisters Rita Porter, and Ann Palongayak. Ann also draws, and like Ralph's wife, Mary Porter, makes wall hangings. His sister Ruth Ruben is involved in the craft industry."
