Native American / First Nations, Northwest Coast United States, Alaska or Canada, Inupiaq/Inuit people, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. Hand-carved walrus ivory birds perched on a stone cliff, the rock face carved into nesting niches. The flat verso is carved with a simple face, perhaps the artist had a different plan for this stone before adding the birds. Cliffside bird colonies were an important seasonal food source for Indigenous arctic peoples, nearly everyone who was able to would climb to collect eggs and nesting birds, and large nets were used to harvest incoming birds. Size: 3" L x 2" W x 2.5" H (7.6 cm x 5.1 cm x 6.4 cm)
