Description:

Native American / First Nations, Northwestern United States Alaska / Canada, Inuit people, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved caribou antler depicting a whimsical bird, perhaps a crane or heron, with an elongated neck/body, lengthy legs, and inked eyes. Bone, ivory, and antler carvings such as this have been made by Arctic people for centuries, and by the late 19th century such sculptures were made primarily for sale. The width and unusual curves and tines of antlers might be seen as restrictive to some carvers, but the natural shapes are embraced by Inuit carvers and can provide an interesting contour for the finished piece! Size: 18" L x 1.2" W (45.7 cm x 3 cm)
