Description:

Near East, Pakistan/Afghanistan region, Mehrgarh period, ca. 2800 to 2600 BCE. A characteristically bird-faced Indus Valley fertility goddess figurine, positioned in a quasi-sitting pose with outstretched arms that resolve in round hands. Created in tribute to the gods and goddesses of the cultures of the ancient Indus Valley, such figurines are found throughout the region, yet few boast such an elaborately decorated presence, including an applied elaborate headdress and coiffure (see the backside especially) and multi-stranded necklace. It never ceases to amaze us, that as ancient as this figurine is, it continues to emit mystery and wondrous symbolism. Custom, museum quality stand. Size: figurine itself measures 4-5/8" (11.7 cm). Provenance: Ex-private East Coast, USA collection. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #108690

  • Condition: Minor losses to headdress and normal surface wear as shown. Nice mineral deposits on surface.
