Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sulawesi Island, Toraja people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A rare example of chest armor known as a baju lamina, made with tightly woven rattan fibers in the form of a vest with thin bark panel scales and bovine teeth sewn to the surface. Lacking neck and arm cover, such armor was more ceremonial than protective, warriors would wear these in dances and important events. Water buffalo, which the teeth are probably from, were important gift and exchange animals that marked social status as well. Size of case: 36" L x 6.5" W x 43.5" H (91.4 cm x 16.5 cm x 110.5 cm); vest: 29" L x 18" W (73.7 cm x 45.7 cm)

  • Condition: Fair condition. Tears and losses to rattan weaving on interior layers, and tear and fraying to fibers on lower front edge. Losses to some bark panels and missing several attached teeth. Displayed in modern glass and wood case. The front opens via a hinge and magnet clasp. Abrasions and scuffs to frame.
