Description:

Toba Batak people, Sumatra, early-mid 20th century. Wood, fiber, bamboo sections. The triangular wood plaque showing a deity face and lizard image above; a dozen or so bamboo sections dangling below with the distinctive writing of the Toba Batak, the characters based on Hindu influence from the Indian continent. Possibly a love poem, possibly a magical object used by a shaman. 10.75"L x 4"W.

Provenance: Collected by Bernd Ratz, Maulbronn, Germany, ca. 1969.
