Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumatra, Palembang, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. This hilt is a wonderful example of the Jawa Demam design, a type embraced throughout Indonesia or Malaysia known for its distinct shape that blends sloping contours, crisp edges, and dramatic curves. this example is most impressive for the elaborate carving. Just look at those spiraled eyes, magnificently carved scrollwork and stylized geometric motifs covering the body, not to mention the fine wavelike border just above the tumpal. Carved from ivory, this example also boasts some shiny sections that are characteristic of the type created in Palembang, once the capital of the Srivijaya Empire, a Hindu-Buddhist kingdom that flourished from the 7th to the 12th century and stretched from Sumatra to the Kra Isthmus in southern Thailand.
