Description:

North America, Germantown, ca. 1700 to 1900 CE. An intriguing example of Native American weaponry. Tomahawks were a type of single-handed axe from North America, traditionally resembling a hatchet with a straight shaft. The name came into the English language in the 17th century as an adaptation of the Powhatan (Algonquin language) word tamahaac. The Algonquin Indians created the tomahawk. Prior to European arrival, they used stones rather than metal blades. When Europeans arrived in North America, they introduced the metal blade to the natives, which improved the effectiveness of the tool. This lot also includes a handsome Native American pipe. Quite a bonus! Size of tomahawk: 8"H x 3-1/2"W. Provenance: Ex-private Elaine I. Immermann collection, New York. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #109005
