Description:

India, Shunga Period, ca. 2nd to 1st century BCE. A lovely, mold-made terracotta plaque showing the goddess Yakshi (also known as Yakshini) in relief. The figure has the voluptuous form, especially in the hips and stance, of all depictions of the goddess. The Shunga period is notable for a flowering of artistic creation, especially of small terracotta images like this one. One of the most famous works of art from this period is the Great Stupa at Sanchi, in Madhya Pradesh, central India, whose four thirty-five foot high gateways are decorated with images of fertility spirits exactly like this yakshi. Size: 3.5" W x 5.9" H (8.9 cm x 15 cm); 6.6" H (16.8 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Fragment of a larger plaque, but goddess is fully shown. Chipping to peripheries and some nicks and abrasions, commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice presentation with good remaining detail.
