Lot 77A
India, Pala period, 8th to 12th century CE. An outstanding stone stele depicting Avalokitshvara. Carved of almost black hard stone the eternally youthful Lord of Compassion stands in tribhanga pose, displaying the gesture of charity with his right hand and holding the stem of a lotus with his left, dressed in the trappings of royalty with a crisply carved jeweled collar, belt, and yajnopavita (sacred thread), and Amitabha arising from a lotus in his crown. Two supplicants stand below while a seated Buddha sits above to Avalokitshvara's right. The figures appear before an elaborate throne back supported by elephants and vyalas. An exquisite example!
