Description:

South Asia, India / Burma border, Nagaland, Naga people, Kabui tribe, ca. late 20th to 21st century CE. A handwoven cotton shawl made by Naga weavers. The Naga people have faced discrimination and experienced various forms of marginalization, and women continue to weave as a means to express their cultural identity, for economic reasons, and as an act of resistance. The dotted lines of alternating colors seen on this panel are known as "phibei," which is used on cloths to protect the wearer from downfall or anything unpleasant. The cloth by be a Chinkhuong Phei, known as one of the most reserved cloths for the elder men folk, and traditionally woven with a black-colored base and broad red border as seen here. The term “Chingkhuong” was derived from the word "Chingkho" meaning rich family/rich people or honored people in Kabui dialect. Therefore, the shawl was permitted to be worn only by these people.
