Description:

South Asia, India, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A pair of murti statues, one cast from brass and the other from copper, depicting Lord Vishnu and Krishna. The brass statue, mounted on a wood base, portrays Vishnu standing upon his mythical bird mount, Garuda. Vishnu's multiple arms hold various attributes, and his head is framed by a halo. A peg in the base and a loop on the verso suggest this piece was once secured to a shrine or another altarpiece. The copper statue depicts Krishna as the "Butter Thief" in his form as a dancing child. He holds a lump of ghee or butter in his right hand. According to scripture, Krishna and his brother would steal jars of butter and yogurt from their neighbors. When caught, Krishna would perform a dance to seek forgiveness. The high copper content and surface wear from touch indicate the Krishna statue is likely an older antique piece. Size of larger Vishnu: 1.5" W x 3.5" H (3.8 cm x 8.9 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand; smaller Krishna: 2" L x 1" W x 3.25" H (5.1 cm x 2.5 cm x 8.3 cm).
