Central Asia, Kushan Empire, ca. 1st to 3rd centuries CE. A wonderful red sandstone head of a yakshi, a nature goddess associated with birth and nourishment who is normally depicted as the ideal of a young mother. Boasting a youthful, round visage, the deity gazes outward from generously-lidded eyes above a broad nose, full cheeks, and fleshy lips held in a gentle smile. Her coiffure is pulled back in thick tufts above elongated, heavily ornamented ears. Size: 5.3" W x 6.1" H (13.5 cm x 15.5 cm); 9" H (22.9 cm) on included custom stand.
