South Asia, India, Gupta period, ca. 5th to 6th century CE. A carved red sandstone relief panel fragment that may have been an architectural panel for a temple or shrine. The panel depicts part of the mythical Garuda, a half-man half-bird figure who is the devotee and vehicle mount (vahana) of Vishnu. The tail the Garuda holds in the lower hand might be a naga serpent. Size: 9.5" L x 1.5" W x 13" H (24.1 cm x 3.8 cm x 33 cm); 15" H (38.1 cm) on included custom stand.
