Description:

Central Asia, India, Uttar Pradesh, later Gupta Period, ca. 6th to 7th century CE. A pale red sandstone panel, perhaps made to be set into the wall of a temple, depicting a sensuous, fleshy, high-relief male torso draped with elaborate jewelry - a tight beaded necklace and a huge headdress studded with flowers in relief. The figure holds a shield and the giant paw of some massive animal - probably a lion - is visible atop the shield. Size: 4.5" W x 6.2" H (11.4 cm x 15.7 cm); 7.1" H (18 cm) on included custom stand.

The Gupta period is sometimes referred to as India's Golden Age, when imperial patronage allowed the arts to flourish; this period had great influence on subsequent periods, like that of the Pala Empire and Kashmir. Their refined artistic forms are characterized by fluid, almost whimsical carving, with gentle curves and a geometric attention to symmetry and shape. Many of the artists creating sculptures like this came from the monastic complex of Sarnath.
