Description:

India, early 20th century CE. This is a cast brass statue of elephant-headed Hindu god Ganesha. He is seated, each of his six arms holding a different symbolic item, on an altar before an adoring sacred cow and mouse. The mouse is significant because many depictions of Ganesha show him riding on a mouse (or rat, or shrew -- a small rodent). Pieces like this were produced for export to Westerners eager to have some "Eastern" style in their homes. Size: 5.75" L x 7.9" W x 7.8" H (14.6 cm x 20.1 cm x 19.8 cm).
