Description:

Ancient Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. An incredibly rare forged-iron short sword with a slender handle and a bar-shaped pommel. The elongated blade features sharpened edges on both sides as well as a thick midrib running down the center, and above the shoulder are quillons bearing downward-pointed terminals. The surfaces have been covered in modern times with dark stabilizing material to mitigate further oxidation and preserve its pristine form. Size: 14.5" L x 2.7" W (36.8 cm x 6.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-private St. Louis, Missouri, USA collection, acquired from Apollo Art Auctions; ex-property of a London, England gallery, previously in an old British collection formed in the 1980s
