Northern Europe, Viking, Oakshot type X. Mid 9th century to mid 12th century. Single handed cutting sword. This sword is a good original example of the type. Blade has been cleaned electrolytically and oiled. No corrosion is evident. The blade is doubled edged. Wide fuller to both face and obverse surfaces, runs almost the entire length of the blade, fades out about a 23mm before the point. Blade has a broad rounded point. The blade is noticeably broad, 50mm at origin. In plan the cross guard is rectalinear, with squared terminals. Tang is broadly triangular, tapering towards the proximal end, with a step at the proximal end onto which the pommel finial is seated. The end of the tang is riveted over the end of the finial to lock it to the tang. The pommel is of Pierce’s ‘tea cosy type in transition to Brazil nut’. Size: 36" L x 7.125" W (91.4 cm x 18.1 cm)

Tested for metal analysis and authenticity by Dr. Gerry McDonald at Gerry McDonald Archaeometals, Wales. Results will be provided to purchaser, but confirms age of the metal and manufacturing technique is consistent wth swords from the Viking era.
