Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca Empire, Late Classic period, ca. 1470 to 1523 CE. A finely-preserved pestle of a hefty form, hand-carved from mottled brown stone with dark and light red-orange inclusions. The triangular tool has a smooth pounding face, a tapered body, and a rounded upper tip. Displayed on the sides of the pounder are a male and female, perhaps Pachapapa and Pachamama, the man holding a pair of large woven vessels and wearing a lengthy cord above a slender belt, and the female standing just behind a large pounding mortar. A register of abstract zoomorphic creatures surround the base of the tool. Size: 2.4" W x 7.4" H (6.1 cm x 18.8 cm).
