Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico/Guatemala, Olmec, ca. 1150 to 500 BCE. An expertly carved jade pendant depicting a hunchback figure carved on both sides, crouching in profile, with incised details delineating arms clasped to the chest and legs, with two biconically drilled perforations at the top for suspension. The sculptor of this piece brilliantly captured the dramatic hunchback form, with that pronounced physiognomic deformity and compromised position. Scholars have argued that in the Pre-Columbian world such deformities were regarded as signs that these individuals were special, touched by the deities, and as such they were oftentimes chosen to be shaman. In addition to this meaningful iconography, the skillful workmanship and the inherent beauty of the stone with its bright green and white hues, and the incised detailing, make this piece more than impressive. Custom stand. Size: 1.875" W x 2.625" H (4.8 cm x 6.7 cm); 2.75" H (7 cm) on stand
