Description:

Pre-Columbian, central highlands of Peru, Inca culture, ca. 1350 to 1500 CE. A lovely textile carrying cloth comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers presenting a vertical striated pattern. The textile has a braided tassels on each corner and thick plaited borders on the top and bottom. This cloth was probably used to wrap a bundle of coca leaves and other personal effects - the owner would have tied the package together using the tassels. Size of textile: 16" L x 17" W (40.6 cm x 43.2 cm); canvas: 20.75" L x 22" W (52.7 cm x 55.9 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, 1995 to 2010; ex-Gary Drimmer collection, Chicago, Illinois, USA, 1950 to 1960
