Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 1200 to 1532 CE. A fine section of leg armor composed of fifteen lengthy wooden rods tied together with tightly-woven strands of natural cotton fibers in hues of cream, coffee, fuchsia, and wheat. The rectangular panel displays a concentric cross enclosed in a larger diamond and has woven cords projecting from each corner for attaching to the leg of a warrior. Mounted on a fabric stretcher atop a wooden frame. Size (textile): 8.75" W x 9.7" H (22.2 cm x 24.6 cm); size (frame): 12.1" W x 12.7" H (30.7 cm x 32.3 cm).
