Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 1200 to 1532 CE. A beautiful and sizable textile fragment composed of tightly woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of crimson, wheat, cobalt, and cream. The rectangular panel features four chromatically diverse registers of abstract linear designs that form mirrored triangular forms with linked ovoid forms filling each of the bodies. Gatherings of straight lines separate the geometric forms, and a thin register near one periphery bears a blue-and-white color scheme. Mounted atop a museum-quality display fabric. Size (textile): 39.5" L x 10.3" W (100.3 cm x 26.2 cm); (display fabric): 54" L x 25.25" W (137.2 cm x 64.1 cm).

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private H. J. Westermann collection, Germany, acquired 1955 - 1965
