Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 1470 to 1532 CE. A large olive green stone fetish in the form of a corn stalk with two ears of corn, each carved with hatched, detailed individual grains of corn. In ancient Peru, corn was not the staple food stuff that it was in Mesoamerica; instead, it seems to have mainly been used to make chicha, a beer, and, possibly, a stronger hallucinogenic brew when combined with cactus juice. Ancient Peruvian iconography of corn - from the Nazca to the Inca - almost always shows it in the stalk, with the cob partially exposed. This example is rare for the beauty of the stone. Size: 1.65" W x 4.6" H (4.2 cm x 11.7 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private New York, USA collection; ex-private H.J. Westermann collection, Germany
