Description:

Pre-Columbian, Inca, Central Peru, ca. 1300-1500 CE. During the reign of the Incas, Peru had been the seat of outstanding pottery production for thousands of years. The Moche had developed the stirrup vessel to an artform full of expression and fascinating insight to the ancient Andean culture. The Inca followed in this tradition; however, in some instances they improved upon the artistry and technique. This vessel, for instance, demonstrates incredibly fine painting technique and a more naturalistic facial expression, his closed eyes and mouth engaged in prayer or ritual as he sits with hands to bent knees. The figure is highly decorated in fanciful regalia - his sash, necklace, earspools and headband meticulously painted with geometric details. A small monkey is perched on the handle of the vessel behind the praying man. Appropriately, in the Precolumbian world the monkey was thought to mediate between man and the supernatural. 7-3/4"H x 6-1/2"D x 4-1/4"W
