Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca, ca. 1400 to 1532 CE. A mold-made terracotta whistling bridge spout vessel created by the Inca culture. The vessel design is comprised of two vernacular house forms, each one of a cylindrical form with a tiered conical roof, a central doorway, and several rectangular windows. Twin cylindrical spouts rise from the rooftops. The taller one has a flared rim around the opening, and atop the shorter one is a flared platform with a whistling bird perched upon it. How adorable as well as musical! A special vessel that was designed so that when water would be poured from it, one could hear a lovely high pitched whistling sound - as if the sweet bird was tweeting. Size: 7.125" W x 7.7" H (18.1 cm x 19.6 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Hirsch Collection, Germany, acquired by 1990
