Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca, ca. 1400 to 1533. A hand-built bichrome pottery vessel with an ample ovoid terracotta body ideal for storing water, a puma lying over the shoulder with its head turned on its side, applied and delineated in relief and painted a chocolate brown with white added to denote the sclera of the eye, raised dot motifs below the puma's body, and a tubular neck that flares to a wide mouth. Interestingly, the Inca likened their capital city of Cuzco to the body of this wild mountain cat, and the puma was also a symbol of Inca royalty. Size: 6" W x 9.8" H (15.2 cm x 24.9 cm)

Provenance: private Colgate, Wisconsin, USA collection acquired 1970s to 1990s
