Description:

Pre-Columbian, , Peru, Inca, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A beautiful pottery dish of a shallow and hemispherical form with a bird head handle and tiny tail tabs projecting from the rim. The surface is brightly painted with linear cross hatching and geometric motifs and a pair of cute catfish! The bird- perhaps a duck and the catfish, were both supernatural symbols in ancient Peru. The duck was at home both on water and the sky / celestial realm, and the catfish lived in the murky mud and was associated with the world of the dead, which was considered an underwater world.
