Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Inca, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. An interesting ensemble of material culture from the Inca. First, three copperworks, including a tumi, a ceremonial knife characterized by a semi-circular blade, and two copper rods probably used as tools, all with lovely green patina and areas of encrustation. Complementing this is a petite, round, coil-made redware bowl, an example of the indigenous' table ware. Size: tumi measures 7.5" L (19 cm); bowl measures 4.25" W x 2.25" H (10.8 cm x 5.7 cm)

Tumis were used to sacrifice animals when giving thanks for a healthy harvest. They were also used to perform skull trepanations to relieve psychological disorders. In addition, tumis were buried with elite members of society as a sign of protection and honor. In contemporary times, the Tumi evolved into a national symbol and many Peruvians hang Tumis in their homes.
