South America, Peru, Inca, Post-Conquest Period, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. A hand-built and highly burnished blackware pottery vessel with a planar base, a bulbous, apple-shaped body, and a cylindrical spout surmounted by a thick, slightly everted rim. Depicted on the vessel's body are a pair of stylized portraits with almond-shaped eyes beneath heavy lids, triangular noses, full lips, and cupped ears adorned with lengthy earrings. Incised vertical striations along the vessel's shoulder represent the faces' broad coiffures. Size: 4.375" W x 6.8" H (11.1 cm x 17.3 cm)

  • Condition: Repair to spout at top of body with light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor abrasions, softening to finer details, and light fading to black pigment. Nice preservation to facial details of both portraits.
