Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca, ca. 1438 to 1533 CE. An impressive greyware vessel of a classic aryballos form with a pointed bottom and twin loop handles. Embellishing the vessel body are a pair of relief panels on each side, two depicting a large bird in profile against a stippled ground, two others featuring a momma bird feeding her chick, also with a stippled ground. Interestingly, the styling of this decoration suggests Chimu influences. So it is possible that this vessel was actually created by a Chimu artisan who had been captured by the Inca. A beautiful piece with a fascinating history! Size: 6.375" W handlespan x 7" H (16.2 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: ex private Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA collection, acquired December 2nd, 2019; ex Arte Primitivo, Private TX. collection, active 1960s to present
