Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Central Coast, ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. This effigy bottle is composed of a seated male figure dangling his legs over one end of the bottle, holding a Spondylus shell in his hands - possibly using them as castanets, but more likely presenting them as an offering to Pacha Mama given his positioning. Note how he appears to be gazing upward, his wide-eyes engaged in a trancelike state, his open mouth perhaps reciting a chant or song. Particularly interesting is contrast between naturalistic details of the face and spine and more abstract rendering of the tubular limbs. Fragments of painted geometric motifs on the cube-shaped bottle remain, the remainder having vanished with the ages. 6.75"T x 3.75"W x 3.5"D Repaired at neck and headdress of spout, some loss of surface paint, else quite excellent. Provenance: Ex-Private Santa Fe, NM Collection.
