Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Central Coast, Provincial Inca, ca. 1400 CE This vessel is impressive for its overall form, iconography, and complex painted polychromatic surface. The body assumes the shape of a gourd or phytomorphic form with carefully demarcated lobes. This resolves to a neck with the visage of an important human figure donning an impressive headdress who convenes with a pair of playful monkeys at his sides. Virtually all Pre-Columbian cultures were fascinated by the monkey, an animal in whom we continue to see parodies of ourselves. Simian creatures were thought to mediate between mankind and the supernatural in the ancient Americas. 7-1/4"T x 5-3/4"D Provenance: Ex-Byron Farwell collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

  • Condition: Vessel was repaired. Some residual loss but intact and shows nice representation.
